Trying new things in life presents a puzzling juxtaposition. At the outset, change may appear daunting. Yet once the unfamiliar endeavor is completed, a rewarding satisfaction almost always follows. Of course, there are exceptions, but in many cases, a person’s deepest regrets are the things he or she never did.

In the words of Mark Twain: “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” Typically, people are glad they overcame their initial hesitation or concern to try something new, even if they have no interest in doing it again.

How to Get Started at the Gym

Those who are looking to establish an active lifestyle should heed Twain’s advice and consider joining a gym, despite lingering reservations. Most gyms will grant first-time guests a free pass, sometimes up to a week.

Still, membership is only the first step. From there, new gymgoers need a strategy, or at least some level of direction and confidence. That’s where DeAndré Upshaw can help. DeAndré has inspired men and women across the globe to become more active with his 365 day, 150-pound weight loss transformation, which was featured by Men’s Health

Over the years DeAndré has helped plenty of tepid gym goers turn themselves into goal crushing workout warriors with a little resolve and self-determination. Still, he understands overcoming the initial intimidation is an important first step. “If you’re just getting started on your fitness journey, the gym can be a daunting place,” DeAndré says.

Remember that you are not alone. Everybody was a beginner at some point. Nobody was born a gym rat.”

Having a plan is always smart, even if it’s a basic one. This reduces the risk of going home discouraged. A few contemplative minutes before beginning a workout can lead to breakthroughs in the productivity of the entire session.

“There’s nothing worse than finishing an exercise and spending five or 10 minutes trying to figure out what you want to do next,” DeAndré says. “Spend time before your workout deciding which muscle groups you’d like to focus on.”

Upon joining, most gyms provide at least one free half-hour session with a personal trainer and a complimentary pass to the group exercise class of your choosing.

“Don’t be afraid to try a class,” DeAndré says. “Group exercise is great for beginners, because the instructor will guide you through each exercise.”

Most of all, DeAndré suggests that no one feel bashful in the beginning.  “Don’t be afraid to ask the staff how something works. Take a walk around and check out the machines. Tour the locker room, get comfortable with the space,” he says. “Gyms are always happy to help.”
