America’s relationship with smoothies has been a roller coaster in the past decade. Smoothies went from a healthy supplement, to a decadent snack, and back to a nutritious meal, all in about a 10-year timeframe. In 2019, the jury is out: smoothies can be healthy and fulfilling, if made correctly.

Perhaps the most intimidating meal of the day is post workout. After exerting all of that energy at the gym, people wonder if ingesting certain foods will negate their hard work. Upshaw has come up with an easy recipe that will simultaneously satisfy your hunger and provide the nutrients you need to carry on your day.

One of the beauties of smoothies, and this recipe specifically, is that the ingredients are readily accessible. Frozen fruit is available at most grocers, and you can find Greek yogurt at just about any convenience store.

Some people wonder if smoothies are a necessary feature of a healthy diet. They fear that a smoothie will only add calories between meals and fail to provide any additional benefits. While their concerns are warranted, this smoothie has Upshaw’s endorsement. And Upshaw knows all about counting calories.

DeAndre began his weight loss journey in small steps. Instead of being bogged down by macronutrients and sophisticated diet programs, Upshaw elected to focus on calories by calculating the amount he was taking in and burning. Over time, Upshaw lost weight at an incredible rate. After he made real progress with his body, he had an open mind regarding the more high-level nutrition practices. He began tracking macros and ensured that he ate the right amount of whole grains and vegetables. He also developed his own recipes that enabled him to enjoy food while adhering to a healthy diet.

“What I’ve found on this journey is that the best way to break through a plateau is to change things up, and to keep creating new goals and habits,” Upshaw told Men’s Health. “If I were to look back at that year and figure out exactly what the recipe was for me, I think it was 70 percent calorie watching and counting, and 30 percent exercise.”

Smoothies can be overindulgent if you aren’t paying attention to the ingredients or consuming them multiple times a day. But if done right, smoothies can be the perfect solution to your post-workout void.
